Zumbi dos Palmares is one of the major symbols of black resistance in Brazil. His legacy remains extremely relevant until the present day, which can be seen in the name of a University in São Paulo. However, right next to the University Campus there is a street named after the man who not only murdered Zumbi but committed a genocide, killing hundreds of ex-slaves, in 1624. Sadly, it is still very common to see streets named after racists, dictators, and torturers, but this has to come to an end.
We created a movement not only to change the street name to the name of the one who should be honored but to tell the Brazilian society about this cruel story that haunted Zumbi dos Palmares students every day.
We developed a visual identity to spread the message across the city with posters and crime-scene-inspired tapes that became urban interventions in important spots of São Paulo.
To recreate the image of Zumbi, we invited the artist Robinho Santana.
First, we took action in the Black Conscience Day Parade, where we first presented the movement and invited activists to participate and spread the message on their social media.
Then, we occupied the street with debates, music, and art to make a statement, while introducing the project in Brazil's Chamber of Deputies.
